Art Favorites: Palettes

Uncategorized

As an artist, it’s important to have the right tools by your side when creating a masterpiece. One of the most important tools is the painting palette, which is used to hold and mix your paint. There are several types of painting palettes available on the market, each with their own unique features and benefits. When I buy palettes I consider two main factors: layout and material.

First I consider the layout of the palette. You can find quite a variety of palette designs out there, with many serving a specific function or purpose. In my supplies I like having: one large and plain, one with deep slots for paint, and a couple of smaller ones of varying designs. This provides me with a good balance of mixing space and paint holding. But this is also just my preference. The more you paint, you’ll be able to find out what styles you like best. When starting out I’d recommend a good medium-sized palette with slots.

Next, I consider what material the palette is made out of. I prefer glass or plastic palettes overall. Plastic palettes are great for beginners and much more affordable. The smooth surface makes them easier to clean and mix on, but they can be less durable. Glass on the other hand is very durable, and will last you forever. They also have a nice smooth surface for mixing, and acrylics peel off so easily for cleaning. They are more expensive as well as heavier to hold.

Side-note: Wood palettes are very nice as well. You will hear them talked up a lot, and they have many benefits. But, they aren’t ideal for acrylic paint which I use. Since would is porous, it’s important that the paint is drying on that surface. Acrylic is fairly fast drying and can lead to maintenance on that palette. You can try them, but it’s more work than I prefer.

Ultimately, finding the right palette for your needs can take some trial and error. Remember to consider the layout and material. Your personal preference and painting style will determine th e layout you choose. The material will depend more on the budget on medium. If you keep these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision when buying your next painting palette.
