Sketching is a fundamental aspect of the creative process. It’s a way for artists, designers, and creatives of all kinds to quickly and easily explore ideas, iterate on designs, and refine their work. It’s an artist’s safe space to explore and test ideas. So I wanted to share a bit of my own sketchbook and go over the benefits of sketching daily. Maybe you’ll even get some sketching ideas.
Sketching is an essential tool for generating ideas and exploring different approaches to a problem. It allows you to quickly iterate on designs and test out different concepts without investing too much time or resources. By sketching, you can easily visualize your ideas and communicate them to others.
Above you can see some examples of this quick visualization. On the left are some sketching ideas I was feeling out. I had a rough idea of what I wanted but wasn’t sure about the set up. So here I tried out different compositions and even re-drew the ones I liked larger to have as a reference. Doing this helps me solidify my vision for painting so I’m not wasting paint by making constant adjustments.
Additionally, it is also an excellent way to improve your skills as a creative. The more you practice, the better you become. Sketching helps you develop your hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and sense of proportion. It also helps you become more comfortable with different mediums and techniques.
Here’s an example of a drawing exercise I like to do. I keep some pages in the back of my sketchbook where I complete this drills that help improve my coordination and line strength. It also serves as a good warm up before I jump into drawing.
Another benefit of sketching is that it allows you to work through creative blocks. When you’re stuck on a problem or struggling to come up with new ideas, sketching can help you break through that mental barrier. By sketching, you can explore different solutions and approaches that you might not have considered otherwise.
In conclusion, sketching is an essential part of the creative process. It allows you to explore ideas, iterate on designs, and refine your work. It’s also an excellent way to improve your skills and work through creative blocks. So, if you’re not already incorporating sketching into your creative process, now is the time to start.
